Belgium appears to have made widespread gains in local elections. With 8% the ballot counted the Flemish Nationalist Party has won more than 36% of the vote. The party's leader, Bart de Wever has won the race to become mayor of Antwerp, the Europe's largest port cities. Maddy Savage reports from Brussels.
The city has been run by socialist politicians for decades and Bart de Wever told the crowds he had never expected to do so well there. The NVA has long argued that the Dutch-speaking part of the Belgium - Flanders has spent too much money subsidizing Wallonia, the poorer French-speaking region in the south. He believes his party's success at a local level will now help him build a platform to take on the country socialist Prime Minister Elio di Rupo in the country's next national elections in 2014.

However Max Brod ignored his friend's request.
