Some 2000 police officers in Brazil and numbers of the armed forces backed up by armoured vehicles and helicopters have taken control of two of Rio de Janeiro's most violent shantytowns or favelas. Similar operations have been launched in more than 20 favelas ahead of the Football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics two years later.

A party that wants to split up Belgium appears to have made widespread gains in local elections. With 8% the ballot counted the Flemish Nationalist Party has won more than 36% of the vote. The party's leader, Bart de Wever has won the race to become mayor of Antwerp, the Europe's largest port cities. Maddy Savage reports from Brussels.
