Three policemen have been shot dead at Mexico City's international airport. Police said the officers had been sent to detain suspects in a drug-trafficking case. Travellers dived for cover when the suspects opened fire, killing two officers; a third died in hospital. The suspects got away.

The Ugandan Red Cross fears that many people may have died in a landslide in the east of the country. At least 15 homes were buried in the area near Mount Elgon National Park. Gabriel Gatehouse reports.

The landslide started in the early afternoon after days of heavy rainfall. Houses in at least two villages are reported to have been swept under a torrent of mud. The Red Cross said its workers had managed to pull a number of people to safety, but that many more were feared buried. This is an area prone to landslides – partly due to deforestation on the coffee-producing slopes of Mount Elgon. In 2010, thousands of people were forced to flee their homes after a mudslide killed more than 350 people.
