The Libyan authorities say they have regained control of the international airport in Tripoli after militia fighters brought it to a standstill for much of the day. The standoff ended after the authorities sent in dozens of armoured vehicles. The militiamen were demanding the release of one of their leaders, who they said was detained two nights ago. Libyan officials say the airport is now under government control. In a news conference, Libya's Deputy Interior Minister Omar al-Khadrawi said government forces detained dozens but others got away. He described the militia that occupied the airport runway as saboteurs. A hangar at the airport is said to have been blown up, and a grass field set alight by the occupying brigade. Tripoli says the international airport will be shut down for the next 24 hours to resolve technical issues like communications.
