Police in California say Rodney King, whose beating by police sparked the Los Angeles race riots of 1992, has died. Officials said Mr King, who was 47, was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool. They say there was no sign of foul play. Alastair Leithead reports from Los Angeles.

Their acquittal the following year sparked the LA riots, which killed more than 50 people and injured thousands more. After a high-speed chase, Rodney King, who was on parole, was stopped and then Tasered and beaten almost to death. In the years since, he'd struggled to live a stable life within the law, but had recently written a memoir of his life and was due to marry.
