Police in Nigeria say they’ve arrested a senior commander of the militant Islamist sect Boko Haram. They say the commander, Suleiman Mohammed, was the sect’s operational leader in the northern city of Kano. Will Ross reports from Lagos.

The Nigerian police are describing the arrest as a significant development. They say Suleiman Mohammed was a senior Boko Haram commander based in the northern city of Kano. It’s been the scene of several deadly attacks including one on the church service two weeks ago that left 16 people dead and another in January which killed more than 180. It has, however, been impossible to independently verify whether or not Suleiman Mohammed is indeed a key figure in the Boko Haram group.

The likely republican presidential candidate in the United States Mitt Romney has restated his belief that marriage should only be between a man and woman in a speech to a Christian audience. He told graduates at the Liberty University in the important swing state of Virginia that America was built on Christian values. His comments come just days after President Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage.
