The American politician Ron Paul says he's ending his active campaign to become the Republican candidate in the US presidential election in November. Mr Paul said he would no longer spend money campaigning in primaries, the contests in which the field of presidential candidates is narrowed down. Mr Paul insisted he would continue fighting for the nomination in state conventions.

The exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, has received the $1.8m Templeton Prize at a ceremony in London. It was awarded to him for promoting scientific research and harmony among religions. The Dalai Lama spoke of the routes of conflict with the Chinese authorities in Tibet, and he praised India while he lives in exile for allowing many religious traditions to coexist in mutual respect. He said the bulk of the prize money will go to help malnourished children in India.
