One of Egypt's top football stars has been banned from an international tournament next month after making a gesture of support for the deposed Islamist President Mohammed Morsi during the African Champions League Final. Ahmed Abdul Zaher gave the 4-fingered-salute, known as the Rabaa after scoring during the match on Sunday. He said he did it in memory of all who died during the political upheaval whether they were citizens or policemen. Egypt's sports minister described the salute as a grave insult.
Israeli far-right politician Avigdor Lieberman has been reappointed as foreign minister after being cleared of corruption charges last week. Parliament endorsed his return to government by a 62 votes to 17. Mr. Lieberman is a critic of US-backed peace negotiations with the Palestinians which resumed in July. His party, Yisrael Beitenu ,is part of the governing coalition of the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Police in the Polish capital Warsaw has used teargas and rubber bullet to deal with violence during an annual march celebrating Poland's independence day. From Warsaw, here is Adam Easten.
The annual march, organized by far-right and nationalist groups began noisily but peacefully. Many wave red and white polish flags. Red-colored flares and fire crackers were lit. Then groups of young men, some in balaclavas or wearing football scarves over their faces broke away from the march to attack a nearby squat. Cars were set alight, an art installation in the city square rainbow-colored arch designed to symbolize tolerant was burnt down.
