President Obama has arrived in South Africa after playing down speculation that he might visit Nelson Mandela in hospital. In comments on board Air Force One, Mr Obama said the last thing he wanted was to be in any way obtrusive. James Copnall reports.

The global icon is still critically ill in hospital. Mr Obama has already said he is not looking for a photo op or to get in the way of Mr Mandela's family. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Mr Mandela's ex-wife, said she felt it would not be right for Mr Obama to visit the hospital given Mr Mandela's condition.
