According to a survey onreading conducted in 2001 by the U.S. National EducationAssociation (NEA),young Americans say reading is important, more important than computersandscience. Over 50% of the 12 to 18 years old interviewed say they enjoy readinga lot. 79%find it stimulating and interesting. And 87% think it is relaxing. About68% of those surveyeddisagreed with the opinion that reading is boring or old-fashioned. Over half teenagersinterviewed said they readmore than ten books a year. The results also show that middle schoolstudentsread more books than high schoolers.
Over 66% of teens like toread fiction, such as novels and stories. Over 26% are interestedinnon-fiction, such history books.64% of students listed reading stories aboutpeople my ownage. Thats a favorite topic. Mysteries and detective stories camesecond on the list at 53%.Just under 50% said they were interested in reading abouttheir own culture in tradition. Of theteenagers who participated in the survey,49% said that libraries are where they get most oftheir books. However, many complainthat their school libraries do not have enough up-to-dateinteresting books andmagazines. Even though many teenagers in the US enjoy reading, theystill have otherinterests. When asked which activity would be the most difficult to give up foraweek, 48% said listening to music. TV would be difficult to give up for 25%of those surveyed.
