例句2：Poor Bill, hes been in love with this girl for at least a year but he cant get to first base with her. He cant even get her to go out and have a cup of coffee with him.

在这段话里的not get to first base意思是毫无眉目，也就是连成功的开端都谈不上。

棒球运动员从一个base跑向另一个base的过程中，有一个关键就是，他的脚或者身体的任何一个部位必须触及每一个base，否则就会被判出局，得不成分。由这条规则又产生了好几个习惯用语。我们接下来要讲其中的一个: touch all the bases。 Touch all the bases如果按照字面意思直译，就是接触所有的垒。当然和其它习惯用语一样我们不能光从字面意思来理解它。好，让我们通过一个例子来琢磨它的意思。

例句3：This new proposal looks good to me. But before we go ahead, lets touch all the bases to make sure its okay: our sales manager, our production chief, our accountant, and of courses our lawyers. We dont want any trouble later.
