跟backseat driver 密切相关的一个短语是take a back seat。虽然长得很像,但它们的意思却完全相反。take a back seat是指真正坐在后座上,让司机安心开车。引申开去,就是允许他人取得主控地位,甘愿居于人下、退居幕后。可见,backseat driver是不肯take a back seat的人。
有小部分的学者认为take a back seat这个短语来源于英国议会:不想发言或出风头的议员通常都会选择后排的座位,因此有了take a back seat -说。尽管如此,各大词典还是支持take a back seat跟backseat driver是同一起源的解释。换句话说,这两个短语都是美国制造。
take a back seat在2007年还一度成为热门短语。大获成功的美国电影Dreamgirls(《梦幻女郎》)让新人Jennifer Hudson顺利拿下包括奥斯卡(Oscar)最佳女配角在内的几乎所有电影大奖。
相比之下,片中的另外一位女演员、大名鼎鼎的当红歌星 Beyonce就显得黯淡无光了。她没有获得任何奖项的提名,风头完全被Jennifer盖过。考虑到Jennifer足参选“American Idol" (《美国偶像》)的失败者,在Dreamgirls之前也没演过任何电影,而Beyonce则是手握9座格莱美奖(Grammy)、演出过Austin Powers in Goldmember(((王牌大贱谍3》)等超级卖座电影的巨星,也难怪天后心里会觉得不是滋味。各种各样关于她嫉妒Jennifer.因为这是典型的陈词滥调。就因为我是明星,大家就都理所当然地认为我不肯放下身份,甘愿退居次席。实际上,我是愿意的。)
