其实英语里一个单词两种发音的情况不在少数,比如vase,既可以读vase,也可以读vahse。为什么不选vase这样比tomato更简单的词作代表呢?因为早在1937年,美国电影Shall We
Dance(《随我婆娑》)就已经使用了tomato的例子。该电影曾获奥斯卡最佳原创歌曲的提名,其中的一首插曲Leti Call the WholeThing Off早巳深入人心:You say eether and I sayeyether*(你说 eether,我说 eyether)You sav neether and I say nyther*(保说neether,我说nyrher)Eether. eyether. neether', nyther(既然这么不和谐)Let'scall the wholething off!(我们还是算了吧!)You like potato and Ilike potahto(你喜欢说potato,我喜欢说potahto)You like tomato and I like tomahto (你喜欢说tomato,我喜欢说tomahto) 这是指neither的发音。这首歌还用了很多其他的例子,包括pajamas/pajahmas、lafter/lahfter (laughter). vanilla/vanella等,但真正流行起来的只有tomato/tomahtopotato/potahto这两对组合。说来也巧,这两个例子正好在中文里也说得通。tomato既可以叫“番茄”,也可以叫“西红柿”;potato既可以叫“土豆”,也可以叫“马铃薯”。
