Chinese Canadian college student Shu Stanley Lam designed fashionable but practical costume for the Vancouver Olympics celebrating activities, hoping his design could bring more green elements to the Games.
The 26-year-old Lam was the designer for the 3,000 children who would sing the national anthem in Richomond just before the opening ceremony on Friday. Lam's production was the coat with red, white and black colors, simply but meaningful.
In the back of the coat, a big deforming red maple leaf stole the limelight and Lam explained the leaf can be understood not only by the Canada's symbol maple leaf, but also seen as flame and the moose.
"Flame can be translated as sports spirit and passion, and the moose was aslo a famous animal for our country," Lam told Xinhua at his home.
Majoring at fashion design in the Parsons School of Design in New York, Lam enrolled into the costume team for the Vancouver Olympics in last December and finished his design in December.
"I hope I can do something for the country when such a big event comes. It is my honor to do so," said Lam.
"When I created this coat, I wanted the children could wear it even in our daily life, not just for the Olympics. Green coats for the green games," he said.
