Greece won gold in the 5km open water team race at the 30th European Swimming Championships in Hungary on Friday.
The Greeks, whose team comprised of Spyridon Gianniotis, Antonios Fokaidis and Kalliopi Araouzou, won with a time of 59 minutes 3 seconds.
In a tight finish for the silver medal, Italy (Simone Ercoli, Simone Ruffini and Rachele Bruni) came second with a time of 59 minutes 55.6 seconds, just 3.9 seconds ahead of Russia (Sergey Bolshakov, Daniil Serebrennikov and Anna Guseva).
Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic, France, Switzerland and Ukraine finished from fourth to ninth respectively.
Synchronized swimming heats were taking place in Budapest, while the open water team event in Balatonfured on Lake Balaton, 120km southwest of the Hungarian capital, was the only final on day three of the championship.
On Saturday, the men's 25km open water final will take place in Balatonfured while synchronized swimming solo and team free routine finals will be held in Budapest. The pool and diving competitions begin on Monday.
