Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho on Monday ended the controversy over his club not allowing him to take temporary charge of the Portuguese national team.
Mourinho said he would have liked to have coached Portugal for two games: against Denmark and Iceland next month, to provide temporary cover for the recently sacked Carlos Quieroz.
Real Madrid refused to allow him to do that and on Saturday Mourinho was clearly annoyed by his club's attitude.
However, this Monday he insisted that the affair had not damaged his relation with either Real Madrid or club president Florentino Perez.
"The President doesn't have to give any explanation. A coach should not comment anything about his President," he said in his Monday press conference, which was broadcast on GolTV in Spain.
Mourinho also refused to comment what he had told his players, three of whom: Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Carvalho and Pepe play for Portugal.
"What I say to the players is my affair, or ours. It is like being at home - what happens in the dressing room stays there," he said.
Mourinho then gave his timid approval to Paulo Bento who has been named as the new Portugal coach, but hinted that he would be prepared to offer his help in the future.
"It is not a question of being in favor or being against him. I am Portuguese and I will always support him. I will always support my country's coach. I am not a coach in this question, I am Portuguese," he said.
