再通过GOOGLE查询town mayor这一说法，结果也是相当多。如2005年11月，18岁美国高三学生迈克尔·塞申斯走马上任，成为拥有8200名居民的美国密歇根州希尔斯代尔市市长，当时媒体报道使用的其头衔就是town mayor。2008年5月，美国俄克拉荷马州莫斯克吉市也选出了一位少年市长，美联社的英语资讯报道中明确称其为town's mayor：

不仅是法国，比利时也有district mayor。在北京市招商引资的权威网站北京商务中心区首页的一篇英文消息说：ViceDistrictMayoroftheSt.PierreDistrictofBrussels,BelgiumwillalsoleadadelegationtovisitChaoyangDistrict.

从上述情况来看，“县长”，“区长”和“乡镇长”等官衔在英语中的对应词语就是mayor。而我们长期以来坚持为这些官衔自创译文，其中的原因可能在于我国的广大民众，无论是专家还是普通百姓，从接触英语的那一天开始，对于mayor就是市长这种对应关系已经根深蒂固，以至于认为只有一座城市的最高行政长官才配称作mayor，而中国等级分明的官场文化也许又加剧了这一误解，因为如果属于一座大城市管辖的区长和县长也叫mayor，那岂非是乱了套了。
