　　It is a real mother who wrote the letter — a mother's letter written 30 years ago to a daughter who was then a baby.

　　My darling Linda,

　　It seems strange to be sitting here writing to you,

　　my little girl,

　　while you sit at the nursery table,

　　so good and quiet. And you will not read my letter for 20,

　　30—perhaps 40 years! It is a strange,

　　grown­up woman I am writing to—a woman I don't know at all. But that woman will be you,

　　Linda,

　　and because I love her,

　　I want her to have all the happiness that life can offer,

　　I don't want that happiness to be spoilt—spoilt by me,

　　her own mother. When you read this letter I shall be an old lady like Grandmama,

　　like all the other old ladies we know and I don't intend to let you suffer what I have suffered from the selfishness of the old. So I am telling you,

　　here and now,

　　that when the time comes you must put me into a rest home. Don't worry about what anyone says—don't worry about anything I shall say—just be firm,

　　and send me away.
