A new study shows that human beings had the ability to make fire nearly 790,000 years ago, a skill that helped them to move from Africa to Europe.
By analyzing flints(燧石) found at a site on the bank of the river Jordan, researchers discovered that early civilizations had learned how to make fire, which was a turning point that allowed them to explore unknown lands.
A study of the site published in 2004 showed that man had been able to control fire in that early time period, passing it by means of burning branches, for example. Researchers, however, now said that ancient people could actually start fire—rather than just relying on natural phenomena, such as lightning—which helped the ancient people move northward.
The new study made a survey of 12 different time periods at Gesher in northern Israel and was led by Nira Alperson. “The new study shows that there was a continued, controlled use of fire through many civilizations and that they didn’t just depend on natural fires,” Nira said on Sunday.
While they did not find any signs of ancient matches, Nira said the burned flint found in the same place throughout the 12 different time periods was evidence of ancient people’s fire-making ability, though they weren’t very sure what methods were used.
