Her major field of study is soft matter physics, particularly its applications to living organisms and the relationship between structure and other materials.Her contributions to science have not only been recognized by her field of research.Early in 2009, she was the winner of L'Oreal/UNESCO's“For Women is Science Laureate (Europe)” and was appointed Commander of the British Empire for services to physics.

　　She was married to Matthew Donald (a mathematician) and has two children, a son and a daughter.She says that she has simplified her housework, for example, by buying the most practical electric appliances and easy­iron clothes.Perhaps only women scientists who want to have families understand her.

　　The Lifetime Achievement Award, which was supported by the Institute of Physics this year, is designed for excellence in entrepreneurship(企业家精神)f years, the Institute of Physics has pioneered many programmes to attract more women to science, especially physics.But in spite of our best efforts, and those of other organizations, women are still seriously short in the physical sciences and engineering This means that many women may be failing to get opportunities for an exciting and pleasing career.Equally, it means that science and engineering are failing to attract possible talents.We are really proud of Dame.She sets a good example for all women.”
