　　8．afford vt.负担得起；提供

　　【教材原句】Several hundred years ago，oil painting was often done on wood if the painter could not afford to buy canvas.

　　数百年以前，如果画家买不起画布，油画通常就被画在木头上。

　　(1)afford是及物动词，与can，be able to等连用，表示“负担得起(费用、损失、后果等)；抽得出(时间)”，其后一般接名词、代词、不定式等，主要用于否定句、疑问句。

　　We couldn't afford(to buy)a computer.

　　我们买不起一台电脑。

　　Are you able to afford the time for a holiday?

　　你能抽出时间去度假吗？

　　(2)表示“提供，给予”，其后可以接双宾语(直接宾语通常为抽象概念)。

　　These efforts afforded us useful experience.

　　这些努力使我们得到有益的经验。
