It is important to make sure volunteers feel useful and are given a variety of tasks to do. When a volunteer realizes there is no real contribution to make, he or she will not come back. Sometimes being given too many boring repetitive tasks drives volunteers away, too.
A teacher who wants to use the service of volunteers successfully should give time to the planning of tasks. Make a list of possible tasks for the volunteer to do. The tasks can be kept in a notebook. Information such as class schedule, names of students and school rules could also be included in the notebook. When the volunteer arrives, the teacher may not immediately have an opportunity to explain tasks. The volunteer can then check the notebook and pick a job on his or her own decision.
It is obvious that the class benefits from having adults. Children often behave better with the volunteer near them. Some volunteers work one-on-one with children or with small groups, helping children get needed attention. The volunteer can complete paper correcting or other tasks listed above, freeing the teacher for more teaching time.
Meanwhile, parent volunteers do need to understand that any information about children is to remain confidential. They should be coached on appropriate methods in a school system. They especially need to be careful of what they say.
