Another important reason why people should protect animals is that the delicate ecological balance might be irreparably harmed by extinction. For example, if farmers chop down the forests and use the land to grow corn, they might simultaneously destroy their homes of a kind of bird that eats locusts. The next year the locust population can grow unchecked, and then the locusts can destroy the entire nearby corn crop. Not only do the birds lose their homes, but humans also are harmed. The ecological balance of many natural habitats is still not well understood and humans interfere in it at their peril.

　　Finally, humans can learn some valuable things from animals. One example is in the field of medicine. By observing a particular kind of monkey in south America, scientists have discovered that the monkeys eat a kind of plant when they get sick, through researching, the scientists found out that this specific plant also has medicinal value for humans. If the monkey's habitat had been destroyed to create more farmland, not only would we lose the monkeys and the plants, but we would also lose life­saving medicines and the potential for medical research.

　　To ensure a better world for both the humans and the animals, we have no time to waste and actions should be taken right now.
