Paul Wyatt at the Drug Discovery for Tropical Diseases program at the University of Dundee led a study.He says the research found a weakness in the parasite.The weakness is an enzyme(酶)called N­myristoyl transferase，or NMT，which the parasite needs to survive.

　　The researchers developed a mixture of chemicals that prevent the performance of the enzyme.They put it in a test glass containing the parasites.As a result，the parasites stopped reproducing.The researchers also tested the treatment on lab mice with sleeping sickness.They gave them the chemicals by mouth and found the infection disappeared.

　　Now，Paul Wyatt says a drug based on the research could be ready for testing in humans within eighteen months.At present，medicine for sleeping sickness requires a series of injections that are costly and painful and hospital stays are also needed.Even worse the side effects of the treatment can be serious，sometimes even causing death.

　　Paul Wyatt says a less costly，easy­to­use medicine for sleeping sickness is badly needed.“In areas where sleeping sickness is still very prevalent，such as poor areas in some central African countries where about half population catch it，it will be also important to have simpler treatment and mouth treatment would be the best.And this is what we are working for.”
