　　M：Hey, Lucy. What are you reading?

　　W：A book about Helen Keller, the famous American lady. Have you ever heard about her?

　　M：Yes. She is well known all over the world. She had a high fever which caused her to become deaf and blind when she was around 2 years old.

　　W：Yes, she struggled to communicate for a long time. Then she learned to feel people's hands to try to find out what they were doing. She learned many things in this way.

　　M：Unbelievable. She really was a wonder!

　　W：Day by day she learned to recognize people by feeling their faces or their clothes.

　　M：So how did she communicate with others?

　　W：She signed with her hands so she could “talk” to her family. She had 60 different signs. If she wanted bread, she pretended to be cutting a loaf. If she wanted ice cream, she would hug her shoulders and shiver.

　　M：So clever and creative!

　　W：Helen had an amazing memory, and she also had skills very few people have ever been able to develop. She could put her fingers on a person's lips and understand the words which were being spoken.
