However, historians of the two countries record history in very different ways.US scholars focus on objectiveness (客观性) and accuracy, strictly separating views from facts;Chinese historians,on the other hand, believe the viewpoints of historians are part of history,as they will always shape the moral standards of later generations.I think both ways have their advantages—a view most of my Hotchkiss teachers probably don’t like!
My love for literature has certainly helped my writing in a foreign language. To some extent,I am able to use my experience in studying Chinese as I improve my English writing skills. However,I do realize that at the level of words and characters, the two languages can be very different.I plan to do an independent study on the translation of some of the core (核心) values of Taoism and Buddhism, popular in China but almost “untranslatable” into English.
I’m lucky to be one of the few who have read both Chinese and American literature at a young age.I am determined to take advantage of that exposure for better cross-cultural understanding.
