　　1．To their surprise，the three countries found themselves united peacefully instead of by war. 令他们奇怪的是，这三个国家发现他们非常团结，相处融洽，没有发生战争。

　　【剖析】1）整个句子是一个简单句。

　　2）to their surprise是插入语结构，在句首起补充说明作用。

　　3）“find oneself+宾补”表示“(不知不觉中)发现自己处于某种境地” 。又如：

　　She returned to England to find herself famous.

　　她回到英国发现自己竟出名了。
