　　Golden eagles are North America’s largest bird of prey(食肉猛禽)．They measure 76 to 101 centimeters in length and stand 66 to 83 centimeters.Their wingspan reaches 1.8 to 2.2 meters in length and they weigh 5 to 7 kilograms.

　　Golden eagles build their nests in trees，on cliffs or human structures such as telephone poles.The nests are made out of branches and large sticks and will usually contain fragrant leaves in order to keep insects and other small pests away.A pair of golden eagles can maintain a territory as large as 155 square kilometers which they will defend from other eagles to ensure that there is enough food for them.Some will migrate for food while others will not depend on the condition of their habitat.

　　Golden eagles hunt a variety of creatures such as rabbits，hares，other birds，snakes and carrion.They have even been known to attack fully grown deer.A pair sometimes hunt together to improve their chances of catching something.They fly around，scanning for prey along the ground and when they find something，they will dive at speeds of more than 241 kilometers per hour to catch it.

　　A pair of golden eagles will mate for life and often use the same nest year after year.Females lay anywhere from 1 to 4 eggs and both parents will incubate(孵化)the eggs.The females do most of the incubating while the male is the major food provider.After 34 to 45 days，the young ones come out of their eggs.If they can survive，they may live to be over 30 years old.
