　　Zoey Wall admits it was a little sad saying goodbye to her fish.

　　“But I honestly think it's good that they're going to a natural home，” she said.

　　Hawthorne Elementary School in Helena, Montana, spent most of the school year raising the fish from the time they were nothing more than little fish eggs.

　　The Hawthorne kids took part in a program called “Trout (鳟鱼) in the Classroom”—a national project supported by a conservation (保护) group called Trout Unlimited.So did kids at Wilson Middle School in Fishersville，Virginia.

　　“I got to feed them every morning and watch them grow up，” said seventh­grader Lauren Clayton.

　　“We have to protect them，” Wilson seventh­grader Hunter Strickler said.“Or some of the fish could go extinct.”

　　Strickler was right.When the United States was first founded, rivers and streams across the continent were filled with fish.Since then，pollution, overfishing and loss of natural habitat have pushed some species to the danger of extinction.

　　Thanks to the kids in the “Trout in the Classroom” program, trout are being re­introduced into rivers and streams across the country.And by doing that, the kids are helping to restore (恢复) their local ecosystems.

　　They're also learning all sorts of scientific lessons.While the fish are at school, the kids are responsible for making sure there is cool, clean water, proper food and proper living conditions in the tanks in their classrooms.
