The satellite weighs only 6.5 pounds (3 kilograms) and is about the size of a loaf of bread. The satellite was designed to study space weather. Turbulent(恶劣多变的) weather often disrupts communication between ground network station and satellites.

　　Bennett came up with the idea for the project in a program of the American National Science Foundation, which provides funding for space weather and atmospheric research.

　　The students involved were all undergraduates and were inspired and helped by their professors.

　　However, Bennett said that the experience counted more than the final launch. “We got to see it come from a blueprint(蓝图) all the way to a final product，” said Bennett, the student team leader. “It's a valuable experience that few engineers get.”

　　Bennett, now a graduate engineer, works for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

　　Last week the student satellite blasted into space. It shared a ride on a 78­feet(23­meter) rocket with six other satellites which are conducting experiments for the military, NASA and universities.
