January is usually the coldest month of the year in Hebei. Temperatures often fall to minus 30C and cold winds blow both day and night. Bad weather conditions made life difficult and dangerous, especially for people made homeless by the earthquake. The victims urgently needed warm clothes, food, shelter, first aid and medicine.

　　The Red Cross was one of the first groups to provide help to the victims of the earthquake. The Red Cross Society of China immediately sent medical teams and food and clothes to the disaster area. In Hong Kong, donations from the HKSAR Government and from Hong Kong residents totaled over RMB 54 million.

　　This money bought blankets, coats, jackets, tents, food and medicine for the Hebei survivors. Also, mainland soldiers quickly arrived in Hebei. In the weeks after the earthquake, they helped to build more than 10,000 temporary homes.

　　Unfortunately, natural disasters are not uncommon in China. In 1997, for example, more than 3200 people were killed and 2.87 million homes destroyed as a result of disasters. The Red Cross will continue to help disaster victims by offering them relief.
