WUHAN, China, April 25 -- Former world No. 1 shuttler Lee Chong Wei, 35, commented here on Wednesday that a new scoring system which uses best of five games and 11 points per game may help extend his career.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has been considering the new scoring system to reduce the average match length and increase the peak points to create more excitement.
"The new scoring system can reduce the average time of a match," Lee said, "It may help extend my career. I have tried the trial scoring system before, and I feel that those who can adjust themselves on the court more quickly will benefit from the new system."
Seeded fifth, Lee began his campaign for his third Asia Championships crown in style on Wednesday, safely through to the second round after beating home favourite Qiao Bin 21-17, 21-16.
"It is good to make a winning start. There are several up and coming youngsters who are giving the veterans like me a tough time," Lee said. "Qiao is such a player, he is the future of the Chinese badminton team. After Lin Dan and Chen Long, I think it will be Qiao."
As Malaysia's most decorated shuttler, Lee has just clinched his third gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, defeating India's Kidambi Srikanth in a three-game final in Gold Coast, Australia only 10 days ago.
When asked about his target for the future, Lee said that he still wants to keep playing to the Tokyo 2020, but it all depends on his physical conditions.
