BERLIN, Sept. 28 -- Front runners Bayern Munich suffered their first defeat of the season after losing 2-0 to Hertha Berlin at the curtain raiser of the sixth round in Bundesliga on Friday.
Berlin struck twice within the first half to smooth the way for the fourth win of the season as Bayern lacked in accuracy to turn things around on the road.
The German record champions assumed control from the kick-off and came to chances but Jerome Boateng and Robert Lewandowski headed over the target from close range.
Despite Bayern's promising start, the hosts opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Boateng's foul play to Salomon Kalou inside the box allowed Vedad Ibisevic to convert the awarded penalty.
Bayern responded well but Arjen Robben squandered a golden chance to restore parity from close range before Ondrej Duda shocked the visitors with the 2-0 lead before the break.
After the restart, it was only Bayern whereas Hertha defended deep and lurked for the opportunities.
Niko Kovac's men increased the pressure but Lewandowski and James Rodriguez pulled wide from close range while Berlin's goalkeeper Thomas Kraft denied Sandro Wagner's header on target.
However, Bayern pressed frenetically and continued to work out chances but they were unable to score against well-positioned Hertha Berlin.
With the result, Hertha Berlin jumped on the second place meanwhile Bayern Munich stay on the top spot for the moment.
