LONDON, Aug. 4 -- Britain's Adam Peaty broke his own 100 meters breaststroke world record and won the title at the inaugural multi-sport European Championships in Glasgow on Saturday.
The 23-year-old Olympic and world champion clocked 57.00 seconds, trimming 0.13 seconds off his previous world mark set on Aug. 7, 2016 at the Rio Olympic Games.
His team-mate James Wilby finished second with 1.54 seconds behind.
"I can't believe I beat what I did at the Olympics," said Peaty. "I was in perfect shape then - I'm not even in that good shape now. I didn't try to be in that good shape."
The first edition of the European Championships feature seven sports including aquatics events, rowing, gymnastics, cycling, triathlon and golf in Glasgow and athletics in Berlin. The competition will have more than 4,500 athletes competing for 187 gold medals.
