BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 2 -- Fans from opposing sides will be allowed to attend the Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate this month, Argentine President Mauricio Macri said on Friday.
The decision marks an exemption to a ban on visiting teams in Argentine football, which was introduced in 2013 to combat violence.
"It's also a good opportunity to show maturity, and that we're changing, and [football] can be played in peace," Macri said on Twitter.
He described the match between the famous Buenos Aires rivals as "historic". A former Boca Juniors president, Macri said Argentina's security ministry would work closely with law enforcement authorities to ensure public safety.
The Copa Libertadores final will be played at Boca's Bombonera on Nov. 10 and River's Monumental on Nov. 24.
Boca are aiming for their seventh Copa Libertadores crown while River are hoping to be champions for a fourth time.
The winner will earn the right to play in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in next month.
