SYDNEY, Nov. 12 -- An unexpected 3-2 loss to Chile on Saturday will make the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup a little further out of reach for Australia who will now have to secure their place in a series of trial matches.
The Aussie women's side, also known as the Matildas, were ranked 6th in the world before kick-off in Sydney but can expect that to change after going down to the 39th ranked South Americans.
When asked about the rankings, Matildas coach Alen Stajcic said that the matter is out of their hands.
"All we can think about is improving for the next game and improving in every game from here on."
Few were expecting the result, with the Aussie's previously holding an 11 match winning streak at home, the last loss on familiar soil being against Brazil in 2017.
After scoring the first goal and despite maintaining majority possession, the Matildas gave way in the second half, letting in two goals and failing to capitalise on multiple opportunities.
"We certainly had control of the game," Stajcic said. "They had three chances and they scored three, so that is disappointing."
"We gifted certainly two of them -- that's international football and you pay for your errors."
The two teams will meet again on Tuesday for the second and final match of the friendly series.
