BERLIN, Nov. 23 -- Bayer Leverkusen returned to winning ways after beating Stuttgart 2-0 on Kevin Volland's brace at the opener of the 12th round in Bundesliga on Friday.
Leverkusen started highly motivated into the encounter and assumed control from the kick off whereas Stuttgart lacked in ideas to pose any threat on the road.
The hosts created chances through Kevin Volland, Kai Havertz, Charles Aranguiz and Tin Jedvaj but still none of them were able to break the deadlock despite promising chances in the first half.
Stuttgart came to their first chance after the restart when Mario Gomez long-range effort tested Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky in the 52nd minute.
However, the hosts had the golden chance to open the scoring but Kevin Volland missed the empty goal from five meters with 60 minutes played.
Volland remained in the thick of things, as he was able to mark the opener after heading home a cross from Kai Havertz with 76 minutes into the game.
Leverkusen gained momentum and extended the lead seven minutes later when Volland wrapped up his brace to put the result beyond doubt.
Stuttgart's Gonzalo Castro had the opportunity to reduce the arrears but the midfielder pulled over the bar from promising position in the 85th minute.
The "Werkself" thought they had tripled the lead in the closing period but Lucas Alario's goal was disallowed due Karim Bellarabi's offside position.
