KUNMING, April 22 -- Defending champion Irina Khromachava of Russia withdrew from the Kunming Tennis Open due to injury in the opening round against local player Yang Zhaoxuan here on Monday.
The 24-year-old title holder failed to continue her defending campaign because of some injury issue when she was trailed by 3-2 in the second set after losing the first 6-3.
Home favorite and No. 5 seed Peng Shuai lost to Romanian Alexandra Cadantu 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The 33-year-old veteran's right knee was wrapped in thick bandages, which affected her movement a lot during the game.
In other actions on Monday, three Chinese players Zhang Kailin, Zhu Lin and Ma Shuyue have advanced into the second round.
