GRENOBLE, France, June 15 -- Canada made it two wins from two in the 2019 Women's World Cup on Saturday, qualifying to the round of 16 after a 2-0 victory over New Zealand.
Canada narrowed past Cameroon 1-0 in the first round while New Zealand suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands.
Canada dominated the first half with a surprising 73 percents ball possession and managed 11 attempts, yet it was hard for them to find the back of the net.
However, Canada broke the deadlock just 3 minutes after the interval as Nichelle Prince burst down the left and pulled back for Jessie Fleming to fire home.
Prince forced a one-handed save out of goalkeeper Erin Nayler in the 72nd minute but she still on the score sheet 7 minutes later as Christine Sinclair smacked the woodwork before Prince followed to tap in the loose ball.
Canada sit on the joint-top with the Netherlands in Group E, and the two sides will compete directly for the top spot on June 20.
