WASHINGTON, July 24 -- Cleveland Cavaliers center Kevin Love is the latest player expected to withdraw from the training camp for the U.S. squad and FIBA Men's World Cup in China, local media reported on Wednesday.
Love joins a growing number of players who, either for personal reasons or to focus on the rapidly approaching NBA season, have decided not to take part in the Men's World Cup with the U.S. squad, including Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum (Portland Trail Blazers), James Harden and Eric Gordon (Houston Rockets), Anthony Davis (Los Angeles Lakers), Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards) and Tobias Harris (Philadelphia 76ers).
Love, 30, played in just 22 games last season because of a shoulder injury and averaged 17 points and 10.9 rebounds.
However, the U.S. squad will still be among the favorites for the World Cup title as they are expected to be a strong blend of youthful players and veterans, featuring emerging young players such as Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz), Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics) and Myles Turner (Indiana Pacers) and gritty veterans like Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors) and PJ Tucker (Rockets).
The training camp, to be used to select finalists for the World Cup U.S. squad, will be held in Las Vegas between August 5-9.
