BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug. 19 -- Host Brunei of the 10th Asian Junior Wushu Championships had an encouraging start as its team won gold medals in the first two matches on the opening day here on Monday.
The winning junior players, who had intensive training in China for a month and continued in Brunei, were both joyful and relieved after doing the country proud.
The Bruneian talents triumphed in both the boy's and girl's Duel Event Youth (Taolu) after scoring 9.55 and 9.33 points respectively, ahead of tough opponents including China's SAR Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.
At the previous edition in South Korea, Brunei was only able to collect one gold and one silver medal and the Wushu Federation of Brunei Darussalam, which is this year's organiser of the event, hoped to improve the record on home soil, although Wushu is relatively young in the country.
Brunei Wushu coach Li Hui told Xinhua that he was extremely proud of his teams, especially for his two junior girls, Nur Batrisyia and Dexuan Ling, who had been training very hard for the championships.
The Asian Junior Wushu Championships, a biennial event, attracted around 265 junior athletes of 18 teams from 16 countries and regions.
