RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 2 -- Former Brazil World Cup-winning manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has been sacked as head coach of Palmeiras, the Sao Paulo club said on Monday.
The announcement came less than a day after Palmeiras suffered a 3-0 defeat to Flamengo in the Brazilian Serie A championship, the club's seventh consecutive top flight match without a win.
A statement on Palmeiras' official website said the team would be led on an interim basis by assistant coach Andrey Lopes.
Scolari joined Palmeiras for a third spell in charge in July last year, replacing Roger Machado when the side was seventh the 20-team Serie A standings.
The 70-year-old's impact was immediate and Palmeiras were undefeated in their next 22 league outings as they secured a record 10th Serie A title.
Having led the league in July, Palmeiras have since dropped to fifth, six points behind Flamengo.
