RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 9 -- Brazilian tennis player Diego Matos has been handed a life ban and fined 125,000 US dollars for match fixing.
The 31-year-old was found guilty by the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) of manipulating the result of 10 matches on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit last year in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Ecuador Portugal and Spain.
He was also ordered to repay 12,000 dollars for illicit earnings from tournaments in Ecuador.
In addition to the match fixing charges, the TIU said that Matos refused to cooperate with investigators by denying their request to see his mobile phone and check his financial records.
Matos was provisionally banned from tennis last December, when he was ranked 373rd in doubles. He reached a career-high singles ranking of 580th in April 2017.
