NAIROBI, Oct. 2 -- Kenya and Cameroon are jostling over bidding rights for the women's Africa volleyball qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The two countries have each presented bids to Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB), eyeing to stage the championships which will run from Jan. 6-12, 2020.
CAVB president Amr Elwani said six teams - three men and three women - have confirmed participation with more expected to send in their requests before the deadline in December.
Egypt, Tunisia and Cameroon have registered for the men's qualifiers, with Kenya, Nigeria and Cameroon for the women's tournaments.
Kenya has put in a bid worth 6.5 million shillings (65,000 U.S. dollars) to the CAVB to stage the women's final qualifiers. However, CAVB said they have received an offer worth 70,000 U.S. dollars from Cameroon.
Initially, Kenya put in a bid of 50,000 dollars and Cameroon made it with 60,000 dollars.
In the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Kenya represented Africa in the men's tournament with Cameroon representing the women's event.
Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) president Waithaka Kioni said that Kenya is ready to return to the Olympic arena after a 15-year absence, with its last appearance back to 2004 in Athens.
