HANOI, Aug. 10 -- Vietnamese Karate fighters are expected to bag home three or four golds at the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia, the Vietnamese General Department of Sports and Physical Culture said on Thursday.
The biggest hope is pinned on Vietnamese young women athletes aged 16-20 at both kata (performance) and kumite (combat) events.
Nguyen Thi Hong Anh won a silver at the 68-kg category of the 2017 Asian Karate Championships in July.
In April, her compatriot Nguyen Thi Ngoan bagged home a bronze at the 61kg category of the Karate1-Premier League, the most important league event in the world of Karate.
There were no Karate events in the previous SEA Games in Singapore.
At the approaching SEA Games in Malaysia, Vietnamese martial artists will also compete at Pencak Silat events, targeting three golds, said the department.
