PARIS, June 5 -- Men's world No. 1 Andy Murray recorded the 650th victory in career as he beat Karen Khachanov in the fourth round. Women's seeded players also came through into the last eight of the 2017 French Open here on Monday.
A total of five aces and 29 winners earned Murray a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win against the 21-year-old Russian in two hours and four minutes.
"I think today was probably the best I have played overall," said the top seed, who will face eighth seed Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals.
Nishikori, who advanced through a five-set thriller on Sunday, had to come back from one set down to see off Fernando Verdasco 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0.
Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland beat local favorite Gael Monfils 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-2. The No. 3 seed will next face the seventh-seeded Marin Cilic, who benefitted from his opponent Kevin Anderson's withdrawal due to an injury early in the second set.
Women's No. 3 seed Simona Halep only needed one hour to get past Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-1, while her opponent in the quarter-finals Elina Svitolina had to bounce back from the brink of an elimination to beat Petra Martic 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In her first victory against the Spanish on clay court, Halep struck a total of 19 winners and had huge advantage in winning percentage on first and second serve.
"I played the best match here in Roland Garros against Carla, which always was a tough match," said Halep.
Svitolina beat Halep in their latest duel in Rome this year, but she almost failed to set up another clash with the Romanian.
The world No. 6 lost the opening set 6-4, before taking on a 6-3 victory to force a decisive set. Svitolina faced the threat of being knocked out from the tournament as she trailed 2-5, but she made a powerful comeback into the match as she won the last five games.
The second-seeded Karolina Pliskova also fought hard to overcome Veronica Cepede Royg 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, In an all-France contest, the No. 28 seed Caroline Garcia defeated Alize Cornet 6-2, 6-4. Pliskova and Garcia will meet in the quarter-finals.
China's Wang Xinyu went through the girls' singles second round after beating Varvara Gracheva 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while her compatriot Wang Xiyu fell down to Bianca Andreescu 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
