SHANGHAI, Nov. 22 -- Beijing Guoan tamed Shanghai Shenhua 2-1 in the 28th round of the Chinese Super League (CSL) here on Friday to temporarily lead the table.
Cedric Bakambu helped Beijing take an early lead, heading home the corner by Piao Cheng six minutes into the game. In the 56th minute, Shanghai was awarded a penalty after VAR confirmed Li Ke's handball and Odion Jude Ighalo converted the penalty to restore parity.
Six minutes later, captain Renato Augusto slotted home an accurate pass into the box by Bakambu from the right flank and Beijing resisted the late surge by Shanghai to clinch the victory 2-1.
"I'm very satisfied with Bakambu's performance today. After a long trip back from the international break, he had one goal and one assist in the game, which is very satisfying," Beijing coach Bruno Genesio said.
With the triumph, Beijing now top the CSL table with 64 points, one point ahead of former leaders Guangzhou Evergrande, who will play their 28th round match against third-placed Shanghai SIPG on Saturday.
Shandong Luneng extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to seven matches after beating Chongqing Lifan 2-0. Italian striker Graziano Pelle opened the scoring for the hosts before 23-year-old Roger Krug Guedes sealed the victory 2-1.
With two more games left this season, Shandong consolidated their fourth place in the league, holding on to their ticket to AFC Champions League qualifications.
