XINING, Dec. 6 -- The Chinese women's team maintained their perfect start at the 2019 Qinghai International Curling Elite with a 3-0 win-loss record after Friday's matches.
China edged Russia in a match that ebbed and flowed, grabbing a hard-fought 4-3 victory in the morning. The team then seized on that momentum in the evening, overcoming reigning champions Germany with a close 6-5 win.
"We seized our opportunities and we were able to overturn the deficit," said Zhao Ruiyi, Chinese team leader.
South Korea had earned an 8-2 triumph over Germany in the morning, but the team suffered their first loss in the evening, going down 7-4 to Switzerland.
Following the third round of men's matches in the afternoon, South Korea and Sweden led the standings, with both teams winning three consecutive matches.
South Korea extended their winning start by claiming a comfortable 9-4 victory over Russia, while Sweden remained unbeaten by upsetting the Netherlands 5-3.
The Chinese men's team lost 7-4 to Switzerland, while the United States defeated defending champions Canada 8-3.
The 2019 Qinghai International Curling Elite is being held at the Duoba National Highland Physical Training Base in northwest China's Qinghai province, featuring 16 teams from 10 countries competing on ice from December 5 to 10.
