BUENOS AIRES, March 16 -- Argentina and Uruguay on Wednesday agreed to create a bi-national committee to co-host the soccer World Cup 2030, when it will be marked the 100th anniversary of the tournament.
Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman and his Uruguayan counterpart Luis Almagro met on Wednesday in San Martin Palace, the Foreign Ministry building in Argentina, to offer a press conference and make the announcement.
This initiative was also boosted by the soccer associations of both countries, so on March 17 the Executive Committee of the South American Soccer Confederation (Conmebol) will meet in Asuncion, Paraguay's capital to promote this candidateship.
"We have the agreement of both countries to support the hosting of the World Cup in 2030. I think we can do it; we only have to see the demands they will set," president of the Argentine Soccer Association (AFA) Julio Grondona told local daily La Nacion.
"It is important that the World Cup be hosted where it began," because the first World Cup was hosted in Uruguay in 1930, Argentina Sports Minister Caludio Morresi told state-run agency Telam.
