Even by the standards of the worst financial crisis experienced by at least a generation, the events of last Saturday and Sunday (September 14) were extraordinary. That weekend's deal to rescue Lehman Brothers, the fourth largest investment bank in the United States, is expected, with or without government support. However, after all efforts of Lehman Brothers failed, it ended up applying for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Act. Other fragile financial giants are also trying to sell themselves or raise enough money to avoid the same fate as Lehman. Merrill Lynch, the third-largest investment bank, sold itself to Bank of America, a former Lehman acquirer, in a $50 billion full share swap. AIG is proposing a potential rescue package and acting respectfully in the face of the Fed.
